Key Highlights:

  • POSCO Future M signs $468 million (₩671 billion) natural graphite anode supply deal with a global automaker.
  • Marks the largest anode material contract since the company entered the anode business in 2011.
  • Contract runs 2027 – 2031, with an experts predicting this could be extended to 2037.
  • Follows China’s expanded graphite export controls and U.S. tariffs on Chinese anodes, driving automakers to secure non-Chinese supply chains.

POSCO Future M has signed a $468 million (₩671 billion) contract to supply natural graphite anode materials to a global automaker, marking its largest-ever anode material deal and a major milestone for Korea’s battery materials industry. The agreement runs from 2027 to 2031 and it is predicted it can be extended to 2037. The automaker’s name remains undisclosed, but the deal highlights POSCO’s growing role as a non-Chinese alternative in the global graphite supply chain.

The announcement follows China’s expanded graphite export controls and the U.S. Department of Commerce’s preliminary 93.5% anti-dumping duty on Chinese anodes – developments that have intensified automakers’ push to diversify sourcing.

POSCO Future M plans to phase out all Chinese intermediates by 2027 and will source natural graphite for its new spherical graphite plant in Saemangeum from multiple ex-China sources, completing a fully China-independent supply chain.

According to SNE Research, POSCO Future M is ranked 11th globally in anode shipments and the highest among non-Chinese suppliers. POSCO Future M’s long-term contract is expected to position Korea as a credible anode hub outside China and reinforcing the broader shift toward secure, diversified EV material sourcing.
