SGL Carbon and Toyo Tanso notify customers of 10% to 15% price increases on specialty graphite and carbon products.

Customer notices from the two companies cite rising raw material and logistics costs, with both referring to changes from 1 October 2026.

SGL Carbon and Toyo Tanso have told customers they are raising prices on parts of their graphite and carbon product ranges by 10% to 15%. The customer notices were reproduced on 7 October by Chinese graphite industry publication Graphite Alliance (石墨盟).

SGL’s revised pricing applies to orders received on or after 1 October 2026, while Toyo Tanso’s notice says its adjustment will be implemented in stages from the same date. Graphite Alliance attributed this round of increases mainly to higher costs for petroleum coke and needle coke.

Why It Matters

Both notices cite raw material costs among the reasons for the increases. In its half-year results on 6 August, SGL had already reported that rising raw material prices weighed on earnings in Graphite Solutions, the business unit that issued its price notice. SGL also warned that a prolonged disruption to the Strait of Hormuz could disrupt supplies of raw materials and fossil fuels, or lead to further price increases.

SGL Carbon’s notice was issued by its Graphite Solutions business unit. It says that over the past few years the company has implemented a series of measures to mitigate rising costs, including long-term procurement strategies, energy management measures and continuous operational improvements.

Despite these efforts, SGL said continued increases in energy, raw material, logistics, labour and other operating costs are still affecting manufacturing costs. It said it would adjust prices on some graphite specialty product lines in order to maintain the quality standards, performance and supply reliability its customers expect.

SGL said the adjustment would support the continued operation and development of its global manufacturing and supply network, and continued investment in product quality, process efficiency, innovation and technical expertise.

The increase covers Graphite Solutions products including, but not limited to:

  • Compressed and porous graphite
  • Extruded and vibration-moulded graphite
  • Graphite felt and CFRC materials

SGL said the size of the adjustment may vary by product family, manufacturing process, geographic market and contract framework.

Toyo Tanso’s notice, dated 10 July 2026, cites changes in raw material prices, logistics costs and the market environment. It says the adjustment is intended to maintain stable supply and continue providing high-quality products.

The notice covers carbon product lines including carbon-carbon fibre composite products, graphite electrode products, carbon-related products and carbon fibre products, along with related products. It gives 1 September 2026 as the effective date and states that implementation will be phased in from 1 October 2026.

Product descriptions are translated from Chinese-language versions of the notices as reproduced by Graphite Alliance, and may differ from the companies’ original wording.

Context

In its half-year results, SGL reported Graphite Solutions sales of €234.1 million for the first half of 2026, up 5.9%. The company said this included €28.7 million in compensation payments from adjustments to existing supply contracts with semiconductor customers.

SGL said slightly higher price pressure and rising raw material prices had a negative impact on the unit’s adjusted EBITDA. Overall, Graphite Solutions adjusted EBITDA rose 14.2% to €46.6 million, which SGL attributed to sales development including the compensation payments.

What Comes Next

SGL said its customer representatives will provide further details where applicable. Toyo Tanso said some products may be subject to individual adjustment, that specific quotations will apply, and directed enquiries to its customer service department.
