WEEKLY UPDATE:
Highlights from 26 - 30 January, 2026
WEEKLY SUMMARY

This week in the graphite market, Renascor Resources reported its Adelaide PSG demonstration facility is nearing completion, with all major purification equipment installed and construction targeted for completion this quarter. Talga received Swedish Government approval of the zoning plan for its Nunasvaara South graphite mine and raised A$7.3m in an oversubscribed SPP. Focus Graphite received Canadian patent approval for its silicon-enhanced spheroidal graphite anode materials, covering proprietary processes designed to improve energy density and cycling stability in lithium-ion batteries.

Turning to the wider market, electric vehicles outsold petrol cars in the EU for the first time in December 2025, with battery EV registrations up 51% year-on-year while petrol sales fell 19% - over the full year, EVs captured 17.4% of the market, up from 13.6% in 2024.

Meanwhile, Tesla is ending production of its Model S and Model X vehicles, converting Fremont factory lines to produce Optimus humanoid robots - the move makes sense given the cheaper Model 3 and Y drove 97% of deliveries last year.

US moves away from critical mineral price floors, sources say

It was reported that the Trump administration is stepping back from individual price floor deals for critical mineral projects.

However a U.S. official told Reuters that the administration may use its powers under Section 232 tariffs to impose market wide price floors on certain minerals instead. An approach that could serve a similar purpose.

GENERAL EV MARKET NEWS
EVs just outsold petrol cars in EU for first time ever

Electric vehicles outsold petrol cars in the EU for the first time in December 2025, according to new figures from the European Automobile Manufacturers' Association. Battery EV registrations reached 217,898, up 51% year-on-year, while standard petrol sales fell 19% to 216,492.

Over the full year, EVs captured 17.4% of the EU market, up from 13.6% in 2024. Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium and France accounted for 62% of registrations. Petrol car market share dropped from 33.3% to 26.6%, with France seeing the steepest decline at 32%.

The milestone comes as the EU considers softening its 2035 combustion-engine ban. Meanwhile, Tesla's EU market share fell 37.9% over 2025 amid controversy around Elon Musk, while Chinese brand BYD nearly tripled its share.

Elon Musk says Tesla ending Models S and X production, converting Fremont factory lines to make Optimus robots

Tesla is ending production of its Model S and Model X vehicles, CEO Elon Musk announced on the company's fourth-quarter earnings call. The Fremont factory lines will be converted to produce Optimus humanoid robots, with capacity for one million units per year.

The move makes practical sense - the far cheaper Model 3 and Y drove 97% of Tesla's 1.59 million deliveries last year. Starting around $37,000-$40,000, they vastly outsell the $95,000+ premium vehicles being discontinued.

Tesla expects to boost headcount at Fremont and significantly increase output. The company plans to unveil its third-generation Optimus robot this quarter, described as its first design meant for mass production.
