WEEKLY UPDATE:
Highlights from 1 - 5 December, 2025
WEEKLY SUMMARY

In the graphite market this week, Evion Group was highlighted as a preferred supplier to the EU, while also expanding its order book with A$1.5 million in new US sales. Volt Resources began its Definitive Feasibility Study for the Alabama graphite refinery and Blencowe Resources released a Definitive Feasibility Study confirming outstanding economics for its Orom-Cross project.

Chinese graphite prices for November showed mixed movement. Synthetic graphite anode material rose around 2% for the month, while natural flake graphite weakened, with -194 mesh down about 6% and -195 mesh down roughly 7%.

Turning to the wider market, Tesla’s UK sales fell 19% in November while BYD’s sales more than tripled, signalling a sharp shift in momentum across the country’s EV sector. Tesla’s market share slipped to 9.4% as BYD surged to 7.8%, raising the prospect that the Chinese automaker could overtake Tesla in the UK as early as 2026.

Across Europe, Tesla has also launched cheaper Standard versions of the Model 3 and Model Y in an effort to stabilise declining sales and counter intensifying competition from Chinese brands. The lower-cost models arrive as Tesla’s European registrations fall nearly 49% year-on-year, with analysts questioning whether reduced pricing alone can reverse the company’s downward trend.

EU unveils RESourceEU plan to accelerate critical minerals projects and reduce dependence on external suppliers

The European Commission has adopted its RESourceEU Action Plan - a major policy and financing package aimed at fast-tracking strategic raw material projects, strengthening supply chain resilience, and cutting reliance on dominant suppliers such as China.

The plan mobilises up to €3 billion over the next 12 months, accelerates permitting, expands recycling initiatives, introduces new export restrictions on magnet scrap, and establishes a European Critical Raw Materials Centre from early 2026.

Tesla Sales Drop 19% in UK, while BYD Sales More Than Triple

Tesla’s UK sales fell 19% in November, while BYD’s sales more than tripled, signalling a rapid shift in the country’s EV market.

According to New AutoMotive data, Tesla dropped from 4,680 sales to 3,784 year-on-year, reducing its EV market share from 11.9% to 9.4%. BYD, meanwhile, surged from 2.4% to 7.8%, quickly closing the gap and emerging as a serious challenger to Tesla’s long-held lead.

Tesla launches cheaper Standard EVs in Europe to blunt sales drop, Musk backlash

Tesla has launched cheaper Standard versions of the Model 3 and Model Y in Europe as it tries to counter falling sales and increasing pressure from local and Chinese competitors.

The new Standard models are priced significantly lower but come with fewer features, reduced range, and less powerful motors. The move follows a sharp decline in Tesla’s European registrations, which fell 48.5% year-on-year in October, even as overall EV sales in the region grew.
