GRAPHITE MARKET
WEEKLY UPDATE:
Highlights from 15 - 19 December, 2025
WEEKLY SUMMARY

In the lead-up to Christmas, there has been a flurry of announcements across the graphite sector. Graphite One announced that the EXIM Bank increased letters of interest to US$2.07 billion for its supply chain. International Graphite announced development approval received for the Collie facility. Nouveau Monde Graphite announced the pricing and closing of a US$20 million public equity offering. Mineral Resources Commodities announced the appointment of voluntary administrators, and Titan Mining announced it had received a US$15 million investment from a leading institutional investor.

Graphite prices in China were stable this week, with prices remaining unchanged.

Turning to the wider market, the European Commission has watered down its plans to end sales of new petrol and diesel vehicles by 2035, easing pressure on automakers as electric vehicle demand and charging infrastructure continue to lag earlier expectations.

In parallel, Ford is scaling back its US electric vehicle investments, cancelling plans for a fully electric F-150 pickup and a new electric van, while redeploying capital into a battery energy storage business targeting grid-scale, data centre, and residential markets.

From Woodchips to Anode Material: The Technology Behind CarbonScape’s Biographite

As part of our coverage of CarbonScape, I spoke with Dr Heinrich Badenhorst, in a sit-down interview at the company’s facility, where we discussed the technology behind CarbonScape’s biographite.

During the discussion, we covered:

- How CarbonScape’s catalytic graphitisation process converts woodchips into graphite

- Why this method is fundamentally different from, and far less energy-intensive than, traditional synthetic graphite production

- How CarbonScape ensures consistency, repeatability, and stringent quality control at pilot scale

- Feedback from leading Asian cell makers, and how biographite compares to natural and synthetic graphite

- The technical challenges of creating a new anode material to compete with well-established incumbents

- Product optimisation, performance tuning, and identifying the ideal application niches

- Cost competitiveness in Western markets

- How the process achieves a carbon-negative footprint

- Key technical milestones ahead as CarbonScape moves toward commercial production

Mozambique set to welcome new graphite factory

Mozambique is set to commission a new graphite factory in Niassa Province in the coming weeks / early 2026, managed by Chinese mining company DH Mining Development Limited, which holds the concession for the Muichi mine.

Built at a cost of US$100+ million, the facility is expected to produce 200,000 tpa of graphite and create 1,000+ jobs, with around 800 directly in graphite production.

Inside Biographite: CarbonScape CCO Vincent Ledoux-Pedailles

This week, I spoke with Vincent Ledoux-Pedailles, Chief Commercial Officer at CarbonScape, to discuss the company’s progress as it advances biographite toward commercialisation.

CarbonScape is developing biographite - a low-carbon, high-performance anode material produced from sustainably sourced biomass.

During the conversation, we covered:

- CarbonScape’s upstream, midstream and downstream strategy, and why this year has been pivotal for the company

- How CarbonScape is derisking its technology through partnerships with major graphite anode players in Asia

- The pathway to full commercial qualification with leading cell makers, including testing underway with 8 of the world’s top 10

- Why performance, cost structure, and manufacturing flexibility are stronger drivers than sustainability alone

- How biographite compares on price, consistency, and scalability

- Key milestones expected through 2026–2028 as CarbonScape moves toward commercial production

GENERAL EV MARKET NEWS
EU waters down plans to end new petrol and diesel car sales by 2035

The European Commission has watered down its plans to end sales of new petrol and diesel vehicles by 2035, easing pressure on carmakers amid slower-than-expected EV demand.

Under revised proposals, 90% of new cars sold from 2035 would need to be zero-emission rather than 100%, with the remaining 10% allowed to include petrol, diesel, hybrids, and vehicles using e-fuels and biofuels.

The move follows lobbying from European manufacturers, who argue the changes provide flexibility as EV demand, charging infrastructure, and incentives continue to lag policy targets.

Ford to launch new battery energy storage business, scale back US EV investments

Ford is scaling back its US electric vehicle ambitions, cancelling plans for a fully electric F-150 pickup and a new electric van as it responds to weaker EV demand and shifting federal policy.

The automaker cited high costs, regulatory changes, and the rollback of EV incentives under the Trump administration, joining peers such as GM and Honda in slowing US EV rollouts.

At the same time, Ford plans to repurpose excess battery manufacturing capacity into a new battery energy storage business, targeting grid-scale, data centre, and residential energy storage markets as it redeploys capital toward higher-return opportunities.
