GRAPHITE MARKET
WEEKLY UPDATE:
Highlights from 13 - 17 October, 2025
WEEKLY SUMMARY

This week in the graphite market, Falcon Energy Materials announced progress on its pilot plant, targeting completion in Q4 2025 as three potential customers begin sample qualification. Northern Graphite commenced overburden stripping at its Lac des Iles mine to extend production life, while Titan Mining revealed plans to start natural graphite production in New York amid tightening global supply. Talga Group was also granted new U.S. patents, strengthening its intellectual property position as Western supply chains continue to diversify.

Graphite prices in China remained flat this week.

Turning to the wider EV market, global EV sales hit a record 2.1 million units in September, up 26% year-on-year, driven by strong demand in China and a late rush in U.S. purchases ahead of expiring tax credits. China accounted for around two-thirds of total sales, while Europe and North America also saw record months supported by incentives and new model launches.

General Motors meanwhile took a $1.6 billion hit on its EV rollout, as U.S. automakers scale back ambitions amid shifting policies and softer demand. GM cited the loss of federal tax credits and weaker consumer sentiment, while Ford delayed its Tennessee EV plant and Tesla reported falling sales, as China continues to widen its lead in electrification.

POSCO Future M Secures $468M (₩671B) Natural Graphite Anode Contract with Global Automaker

Recently announced, POSCO FUTURE M — the highest-ranked company outside China for anode shipments - has signed a $468M (₩671B) natural graphite anode contract with a global automaker, strengthening its position as a leading non-China supplier.

Key Highlights:

  • POSCO Future M signs $468 million (₩671 billion) natural graphite anode supply deal with a global automaker.
  • Marks the largest anode material contract since the company entered the anode business in 2011.
  • Contract runs 2027–2031, with experts predicting this could be extended to 2037.
  • Follows China’s expanded graphite export controls and U.S. tariffs on Chinese anodes, driving automakers to secure non-Chinese supply chains.

GM takes $1.6 billion hit on electric vehicle rollout as U.S. automakers rethink future

General Motors has taken a $1.6 billion hit linked to changes in its electric vehicle rollout, as U.S. automakers scale back EV ambitions amid policy reversals and slower consumer uptake.

GM cited the removal of the $7,500 federal tax credit and weaker demand as key factors, while Ford has delayed its Tennessee EV plant and Tesla faces falling sales.

Meanwhile, China continues to outpace the U.S. in electrification, with EV sales there surpassing conventional vehicles and costs falling faster thanks to rising competition.
