Madagascar Opens Up as ExxonMobil Maps Synthetic Graphite Roadmap
Madagascar's Mines Ministry approves graphite mining permit applications, ExxonMobil outlines its roadmap to deliver synthetic graphite at scale in the U.S., Graphite One closes C$35M offering, and Nouveau Monde Graphite awards key construction contracts ahead of FID.

ExxonMobil Graphite Roadmap
ExxonMobil outlined its roadmap to deliver synthetic graphite at commercial scale in the U.S. this week. Their engineered synthetic graphite is designed to deliver up to 30% higher usable capacity, faster charging, and up to 4x longer battery life versus industry-standard graphite. A demonstration-scale pilot unit is planned for launch this year, following a ribbon-cutting with ACP Technologies in Ashland, Kentucky, with the first commercial facility targeting 2029 at 20,000 tonnes of capacity. Production will leverage existing Gulf Coast facilities for advanced coke precursors, combined with proprietary technology from their acquisition of Superior Graphite.
|
Why it matters: ExxonMobil entering the synthetic graphite market represents a significant step towards building a domestic supply chain. With the resources, infrastructure, and scale of a major oil company behind it, this development signals a meaningful inflection point. Combined with the advancing U.S. critical minerals price floor system, the landscape for domestic graphite production is shifting rapidly.
|
Meanwhile, Madagascar's Mines Ministry approved graphite mining permit applications, a significant development for projects that have been waiting years for regulatory clarity. The U.S. price floor system for critical minerals also progressed this week, with agencies pitching the mechanism to allies and partners.
On the company front, Graphite One closed its public offering at C$35M, Nouveau Monde Graphite awarded key construction contracts for its Phase-2 Matawinie Mine ahead of FID, NOVONIX announced it will divest its non-core business, and Talga received an update on its circular graphite anode grant application, with funding under the Swedish Energy Agency’s Industrial Leap program not approved due to budget constraints. NEO Battery achieved near-double flight time in a live drone field test, advancing its non-Chinese battery platform.

ExxonMobil Outlines Roadmap to Deliver Advanced Synthetic Graphite at Scale
ExxonMobil outlined its roadmap to deliver synthetic graphite at commercial scale in the U.S. this week. A demonstration-scale pilot unit is planned for launch this year, with the first commercial facility targeting 2029 at 20,000 tonnes of capacity.
|
Why it matters: ExxonMobil's engineered synthetic graphite claims up to 30% higher usable capacity, faster charging, and up to 4x longer battery life versus standard graphite. Production will leverage existing Gulf Coast facilities combined with proprietary technology from their Superior Graphite acquisition. A ribbon-cutting with ACP Technologies in Ashland, Kentucky marks early progress.

Policy
US Agencies Have Developed Critical Minerals Price Floor System
The U.S. has built a price floor system for critical minerals and is pitching it to allies and partners. Beyond that, details remain scarce - how it gets implemented, who sets the price, and when it rolls out is still unclear.
|
Why it matters: If it gains traction, a price floor mechanism would be a significant development for the graphite sector. It could provide the economic certainty that Western graphite projects need to secure financing and compete with artificially low Chinese supply. Combined with the 160% AD/CVD duties finalised earlier this month, the policy landscape for ex-China graphite is shifting rapidly.

Kaijin New Energy Signs 200,000-Tonne Anode Material Project in Guizhou
China's #5 anode material producer, which shipped 220,000 tonnes in 2025 supplying CATL, LG, and SKI, has signed for a 200,000 tpa integrated anode material project in Gui'an, Guizhou province.
|
Context: A single Chinese project larger than every ex-China anode facility combined. This is the scale of expansion happening inside China while the rest of the world debates how to build alternative supply chains.
